Downtown Osyka! Osyka now boast a population of something less the 500. "Downtown" now consist of two blocks of essentially vacant building. The town owes much of its existence to the Illinois Central Railroad whose trains still come through the middle of the city. For many years the IC was the major transportation conection between New Orleans and Chicago. Older residents still remember the Panama Limited and The City of New Orleans streaking through town and delivering the mail "on the fly." |

Magnolia is the count seat of Pike County, MS and is located just 5 miles north of Osyka on Hwy 51. It is a historic city with many antebellum homes and churches...and great "antiqueing." Plans on lunch and a full afternoon. |
Osyka Cemetary dates from 1852. Take N. Railroad St. about 500 yards north. It will deadend into the cemetary. Be sure to check out the Civil War soldiers graves located in the NW part of the cemetary. |

St. Mary of the Pines of the pines is a Notre Dane Convent that dates from the late 1800's (?). Still active and there is a large Retreat Center. Wonderful drive. Take Hwy 51 to Chatawa... about 3 miles north. Watch for signs on the right saying Chatawa and St. Mary of the Pines, turn right and go about two miles. |
Don't miss the Chatawa Post Office on the way to St. Mary of the Pines. |
